Frequently Asked Questions

Osteopathy is a holistic, hands-on therapy that focuses on the relationship between the body's structure and its function. It views the body as a single unit where all systems (musculoskeletal, circulatory, nervous, and visceral) are interconnected. Instead of just treating the site of pain, I look for the root cause of dysfunction to help the body restore its natural ability to self-heal and self-regulate.

While there is some crossover, the approaches differ:
Osteopathy focuses on global body integration, using gentle rhythmic mobilizations of joints, soft tissues, and even organs (visceral) to improve fluid flow and nervous system balance.
Chiropractic often focuses more on specific spinal adjustments and the nervous system.
Physiotherapy often emphasizes rehabilitative exercises and physical modalities for specific injury recovery.
Massage Therapy primarily targets soft tissue and muscle relaxation.

No, a referral is not required to see an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner. You can book an appointment directly. However, it is always a good idea to check with your private insurance provider, as some plans may require a referral for reimbursement.
-
What happens during my first visit?
Your initial appointment includes a comprehensive health history discussion followed by a physical assessment. I will observe your posture and movement to identify areas of tension or restricted mobility. Most of the time, the first session also includes an initial treatment.
What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable, flexible clothing that allows for movement (such as leggings, joggers, or athletic wear). Because osteopathy involves moving your limbs and assessing your posture, restrictive clothing like jeans or heavy sweaters should be avoided. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session.
Is the treatment painful?
Osteopathic techniques are generally very gentle and rhythmic. The goal is to work with your body’s tissues, not against them. While some areas of tension may feel "tender" when addressed, the treatment itself should not be painful.
-
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on whether your condition is acute or chronic.
Acute issues may see significant improvement in 1–3 sessions.
Chronic or long-standing issues may require more frequent visits initially, followed by maintenance check-ins every few months. We will discuss a personalized plan during your first visit.
How will I feel after a session?
Most patients feel very relaxed. Occasionally, you may experience mild soreness or fatigue for 24–48 hours as your body integrates the changes and alignment. This is a normal part of the healing process.
Should I exercise after my treatment?
It is usually recommended to avoid intense exercise or heavy lifting for 24–48 hours following a session. This gives your nervous system and musculoskeletal system time to settle into the new alignment.

Is Osteopathy covered by insurance?
Most extended health care plans in Canada cover "Osteopathic Manual Practice." Since coverage varies by provider (e.g., Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife), please check your specific policy to confirm your benefits. I will provide you with a detailed receipt that you can submit for reimbursement.
What is your cancellation policy?
To respect the time of both the practitioner and other patients waiting for care, I require 24 hours' notice for any cancellations or rescheduling. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a fee.
